With Gratitude for our Elders

During July we had the opportunity to recognize and to reflect on the gifts that grandparents and elders bring to the community.  We enjoyed our in-person and online workshops on grandparenting as well as the opportunity to share in writing some important research on the impacts of this special relationship.

July 28 was the 4th annual World Day for Grandparents and Elders.  Before we enter fully into the month of August, we want to express our ‘thank you’ to all in the 55+ population.  You represent great generosity in the time and talent you so freely give to others, whether in family relationships or through mentoring and tutoring in the community.  So many young people are thriving because of your presence!

Some form of mentoring, whether familial or otherwise, is an important psychospiritual task of late adulthood.  Studies conducted during the past decade have shown that this kind of relational connection also fosters elder health as demonstrated by an increase in cognitive scores and a decrease in depression, pessimism, insomnia and chronic pain symptoms.  The research shows that giving and receiving are not two separate movements, but are intimately woven together when we truly become present to one other.

Grandparents and Elders, we celebrate you!  On a daily basis you make a phenomenal contribution to the community and to the future!
